It isn't Rocket Science . . .
Project Management isn't rocket science - but equally many people get it wrong - every day. At TDG, we believe that project managers are born, not made, but to consistently bring projects in on time, on budget and delivering what they are supposed to, you need more than the 'PM gene.' You also need a lot of knowledge and a tool kit of skills which can only be learned by experience. We believe we provide that experience and expertise.
It isn't Rocket Science: The Dymaxion Group
Don't ignore the basics . . .
No matter how good your soft skills, as a PM, if you ignore the basics, a project is doomed. And yet, often when we at TDG have taken over 'rescue projects' one of the things that stands out is that the basics have been missed . . . here are some of the things we always look for in a successful project:
Understand that the Customer is the most important person in the room . . .
How many stakeholders truly got what they want from the last project they championed? At TDG we always make sure that we are in lock-step with our stakeholders. By listening, offering alternatives and acting as a strong advocate we make sure they always get what they asked for.
Good Requirements are vital . . .
Many studies have shown that getting good, testable, measurable, concise Requirements is key to project success, and that getting it right the first time is always cheaper and more efficient than rework or fixes, and yet many organizations struggle with how to achieve this. TDG will help facilitate the elicitation process to make sure quality is built into Requirements from the start.
Planning is indispensable . . .
With a wide range of experience in SDLC, Infrastructure and Business projects we can help drive the estimating and planning process.
Dwight D Eisenhower said that '...plans are useless, but planning is indispensable...'. Planning is important, but every project is different and very few come without challenges, so the most successful project managers are not tied to the plan once it is underway; they have the ability to adapt the plan as the project unfolds.
Manage Risks, or they will bite you . . .
On the last project you saw, how well was Risk Managed? In many cases project managers do little to actively mitigate risk. At TDG we believe that Risk Mitigation and Management is a pillar of any successful project. In addition to documenting risks as they come up, TDG PMs will run brainstorming sessions to capture Risk and Mitigations throughout the project and will revisit Risks with the team and Stakeholders at regular intervals and update plans as required.
Communications . . .
We know that strong cross functional communication within organizations helps drive successful implementations. At TDG we like to use Visible Management. This means open, clear communications: We say what we will do, make sure everyone understands their role, and then we make sure we do it!
Team Empowerment . . .
George S Patton once said:
'If you tell people where to go, but not how to get there, you'll be amazed at the results. . . '.
Empowerment always needs to be coupled with good controls and processes, but by empowering team members, we get better results and have happier people who are keen to work with us again.
